may 6.

sunday. a day of rest. no better place to rest than the beaches of maui. after some very early morning catch, we headed to church. let me just say, sitting in the back of a chapel, doors open and waves crashing in the background, wind blowing through my hair, crisp, blue waters steps away across the street..that's my idea of a joyful sabbath morning. after accosting a local on the way out of church, we headed for a quick wardrobe change and a trail to a blowhole by the water's edge which promised "no wild boars." didn't even know it was a possibility, but thanks for the heads up.
we drove up north, stopped for a picture at the sign for honolua bay, and headed up the treacherous coast for the blowhole. we made an executive decision not to continue on past the blowhole, as the map declared the road to be "not for the faint of heart." the lookout for the blowhole was incredible. cw gets his fear of heights honestly, gma connie and uncle ben, and so gma opted not to hike down along the ridge and cw stayed glued to the side of the hill. regardless, it was beautiful. turquoise tide pools were protected from the crashing waves and signs warned against getting too close to the blowhole, lest one be sucked in and blown out to sea. noted.
on our way back, we stopped at honolua bay for some sunday snorkeling. it was a rocky beach with wild roosters, but we were determined to try it out. cw and mw headed out with their snorkeling gear while the rest of us soaked up the sun on the shore. fortunately, after years of water gently lapping against the rocks, they were beautifully round and soft enough for sitting. the abscence of crashing waves was also nice. the kids were able to wander around and didn't have to worry too much about the dreaded salt water getting in their mouths.
after cleaning up and a little chlorinated water rejuvenation, we headed to lahaina to the hard rock cafe. sadly, the hard rock is not what it once was. and the sweet girl singing covers with her acoustic guitar was amped up a little much for the meager crowd. regardless, the atmosphere was cool. my mom and i pulled a g and e and shared a meal. bw literally fell asleep sitting up at the table. i couldn't get my camera out fast enough to capture it. he tilted to the side and startled himself awake. we had to wake cw and aw to walk themselves in when we got back to the hotel. the little boys were out. it was a long, hard, utterly wonderful day.
the lights wreaked havoc with my new camera. i'm still working out the kinks.
