after three long months football has finally come to an end. cw's team lost on saturday. a rainy, cold football day, if ever there was one. cw fought through the wet and the cold and played a solid game. he even filled in at the guard position for a few plays when the cold became too much for our tough, little guard. we fumbled a lot. way too much to even have a chance to run the ball consistently. and we lost by one touchdown. the players and the coaches painted their faces for the game, in honor of halloween. cw wanted haka war paint. he played the part by flashing his tongue and growling. their team finished sixth out of eighteen teams. for a team that was originally dubbed the "b" team of the two minors teams, they won one of three games in the winners' bracket of the playoffs and each kid improved dramatically. we started the season with conditioning practices in the 85 degree heat and ended in the cold and rain of the beautiful northwest. to say that cw grew, emotionally and physically, is a grand understatement. with the help of four great coaches he grew to know and love the game and he has literally caught the football bug. there is no going back now. after his last practice he called me into the front room and sat down on my lap. he laid his head on my shoulder and quietly cried. after a few moments i asked him if something was bothering him. he whispered, "football is over and wesley won't be on my team next year." for a kid who, two months earlier, said he'd rather play baseball than football, he really developed a love for the game. when i asked him what his favorite sport was he said, "whatever sport i'm playing when you ask me."
mw was supposed to be the head coach, anthony. they all agreed he just didn't have what it takes to look that tough. he just looked ridiculous.
