aw's kindergarten musical was yesterday and it was fantastic. when mw flew out to utah wednesday night to help his brother move, gma ellie flew in from utah to catch all the things mw was going to miss. the first thing on our list was the kindergarten sing. aw wore an adorable new dress and stood front and center for their production of "mother goose's goose is loose." bw and gw were enthralled. it was quite cute. she recited "three blind mice" with three little girls from her class. they also sang a few songs and danced. we enjoyed treats and a chat with mrs. p afterwards. it's funny. i had an old, rancid lady as my kindergarten teacher and she was terrible. cw had a young girl and i liked her. when i met mrs. p i was not that excited. but she has really been the perfect teacher for our aw. she's a little old school. she loves that aw is clean and well dressed and particular about ridiculous things. at parent/teacher conferences she spends the first five minutes telling me how much she adores aw and how adorable she is. she spends two or three minutes telling me that she's at the top of her class in reading and math and always kind to her classmates, though she prefers the company of two little girls in particular, and that she treats the boys like she's their bossy, older sister. i like that she doesn't try to make kindergarten more than what it is meant to be: a good, social jumping off point for the rest of their elementary years. she had the basics down when she started and she has picked up reading like i never would have imagined, but she has played and laughed and painted and played some more. and that's what kindergarten should be. a safe place to play and a reiteration of abcs, sounds, and numbers.
