on top of it all.

the indiana state fair it was not. no "world's largest pig." no pigs, period. no deep fried reese cups, spiral cut potatoes, or grilled hoosier sweet corn, wrapped in singed husks. and no humidity. instead of lamenting over all of the things that it was not, i'm going to focus on what it was. seventy degrees. here, in the pacific northwest, seventy degrees is amazing. because it is never seventy degrees plus one hundred percent humidity. humidity is a killer. so i wore jeans today. in seventy degree weather. and it felt great. we ate a huge brick of freshly cut fries. and ooooh, the funnel cake. decadent. can i use such a word to describe fair food? there is something so wonderful about eating a messy treat like funnel cake. there are very few times, as an adult, when it is okay to have food on your face and all over your clothes. and to lick your fingers clean. the fair is one of these precious times. coop finished my plate of powdered cake when i could not. ains and i waited in line for the ferris wheel for sixty five minutes. her excitement was tangible as we waited in line. she was up on her tip toes. then looping her arm around my leg and leaning into me, staring up into the sun with her eyes closed. she loved every moment of waiting and watching and gliding through the sky. she giggled when we stopped at the top and rocked back and forth. and i had to laugh too. she finds so much joy in silly things. and seeing her utterly and completely happy is magical for me. she has such a way with life. always keeping us on our toes. loving us one minute. despising us the next. she turns on a dime. but when she turns back, and she always does, it is wonderful to be a part of. i enjoyed my few quiet moments, above the crowd, with my lovely, little ainsley.
