we went to a wedding. and of the 600+ people in attendance, ten were children. four of those were our children. sound like fun? it was actually pretty great. the lhs class of '96 was out in full force, as was the class of '95. the ceremony was beautiful. i should have taken pictures. but i didn't know the groom that well and i didn't know the bride at all so it would have been creepy. they were married in a grassy field overlooking a lake, mt. baker looming in the distance. the weather was perfect. cocktails and hor' douerves were served in the formal garden following the ceremony. i had to explain what a cocktail was to ains and she thought it sounded pretty tasty. scary. as we walked through the worn, wooden fence to the garden we were surrounded. many of matt's friends had not seen him since high school. everyone seemed to know that he was an orthodontist and that we lived in wa. and though most were astounded to see that he had four kids most had heard about it. at one point matt was immersed in conversation with an old friend when another friend walked up behind him, put his hand on his shoulder, and said, "so you're an orthodontist now with a ton of kids." a statement. not a question. the guy matt was talking to originally said, "isn't it great to be back in the rumor-mill that is lynden?" after cocktails we discussed leaving, but the groom caught matt and asked him to stay. so we found a seat under the huge, white tent and settled in for what can only be described as the best wedding dinner ever served. in the history of the world. unbelievable. and as we were sitting close to the bar and the food, people were constantly stopping and chatting. the kids were great. very well behaved. it turned cold around six and we left for home. as we walked away from the tent and out to our old beat up van i found myself feeling incredibly blessed and content. though matt and i both made great friends in our younger years, spent lots of time having fun, playing ball, and dating, those were not the best years of our lives. right now is the best time. with each other and the kids.
