you just do it.

why are some women lousy moms? a lady at the Y told me the other day that she is enrolling her almost-4-year-old in all-day preschool next year because she just "really needs a break." i was literally speechless. she has one kid. one kid. what does she need a break from? reality? her son spends one day each week at each of his grandmothers' houses so that she can relax at home. are you kidding me? she doesn't work because she's a stay-at-home mom. just because you don't work doesn't mean that you can claim the stay-at-home mom title. you have to actually be a mom. this entails many things, and a few of them are quite tricky. you must bathe your children daily, feed them age appropriate food, read to them, take them to the doctor, change their diapers and wipe their bums, discipline them when it is required, teach them manners, etc. etc. the list goes on and on. and those are just the basics. you have to love your children more than you love yourself. you have to take care of them when you are sick and can't get out of bed. you just find a way to get out of bed. you just do. because that's what moms do. you have to sacrifice your time and your needs and your wants. women who love their children, i mean really love their children, want to spend every moment with them. they want to touch them and smell them and kiss them and rock them to sleep and hold them when they are sick and comfort them when they are hurt. they can't stand the thought of not waking up to them each day. so they savor all of it. the good and the really, really bad. because that's what it's all about. it's about them. and it definitely ain't easy. but it sure is worth it.
