and then the unthinkable happened...

mw and i went on vacation without the kids. for the first time in twelve years. a pretty big deal. we decided to go back to our honeymoon spot for our twelfth anniversary. it was beyond heaven. it was decadent. it was glorious. it was way overdue. we drank pina coladas (of the virgin variety), napped by the pool (at least mw did), swam just for the sake of swimming (and not to launch someone or throw divers). we ate eighty percent of our meals poolside, enjoyed many fresh, fish tacos, fell asleep before ten, laid out uninterrupted, read thousands of pages of romance novels (me) and historical non-fiction (mw). we took a taxi to town for our anniversary, where three older-than-old locals serenaded us during dinner. i went to the spa while mw snoozed poolside at a neighboring resort. mw played in thirty foot waves while i took pictures and secretly peed a little every time a wave got close. we slept until we weren't tired, drank diet coke until we couldn't hold anymore, held hands as we took walks along the beach (this doesn't happen at home as someone is always being dragged, carried, or swatted), ate our meals at a leisurely pace (something else that rarely happens at home). we chased down a man on the beach to purchase the matching pitcher to my hand painted platter, salsa dish, and chip bowl. we laughed until people stared, went out to the pool every morning by nine to save our two chairs in the corner, tried on sombreros, ate snacks in bed, wore swimsuits we would never wear in front of people we know, got in an argument on our anniversary about back scratching (which i won), and with great sadness, headed home to our very loud, very rowdy, very adorable children. and though it was good to get home and hold them and see that they were well, i would go back to cabo in a heartbeat with mw.
