so . . . last night the power went out. and stayed out for three hours. it went out exactly four minutes after matt left for a dental nerd convention. aka a meeting he attends once a month to discuss, i don't know, breakthroughs in dental care. fascinating, i'm sure. so, after a few moments of hysterical, high pitched screaming, from beckett, i located the matches, a bag of 50 tea lites, and grady. who i stepped on in the dark. we lit about 30 candles, trudged upstairs to change into jams early, and settled down next to the fire with a good, long book. it took me twenty minutes to start the fire. the house smelled of gas. so i opened some windows. and then we all froze. but i couldn't make hot chocolate. or popcorn. sitting-in-the-dark staples from my youth. or maybe my imagination. i cannot recall. it was actually quite delightful. and other than the pounding headache i encountered from reading for too long with too little light, i rather enjoyed the complete quiet. no one ventured too far from our little huddled mass on the floor. coop kept everyone busy and quiet, listening for the sound of footsteps. grady fell asleep at twenty after six. and the kids crashed in the front room, the glow of the pumpkin flavored candle their only night lite.
and then it gets better. the power popped on right as my new favorite show started. and then matt came home with arbys. thinly sliced. the only way i will eat it. even though he hates asking them to do it. and after my show and my sandwich i walked into my room to find matt flossing. not surprising. he flosses so often i'm surprised he hasn't sawed through his gums. he looked at me and said, "i think i have a dental emergency." funny. and then he smiled. his left front tooth was missing. the post, from his implant, hanging there like an old witch's tooth. pointy and small. ewww. i couldn't look at him without laughing. i wondered what his patients would think. i was pumped. it was going to be hilarious. i think we both knew we were going straight to bed. no hanky panky when you're missing a tooth. i just don't think it would have worked out. and too bad for me. because he called a dentist in his complex first thing this morning and he cemented the crown back into place before he had to be at work. i was really looking forward to giggling about it all day.
